Donegal, Severe Weather Relief Efforts (Snowfall) 3rd – 11th January 2025

Snowy and icy conditions made driving conditions dangerous across Donegal during the recent cold snap, which lasted 3rd – 11th January. Several yellow weather warnings were issued for Donegal, and as temperatures dropped to as low as minus 7.5 degrees overnight on 9th January, Donegal was escalated to an orange weather warning.

During this period, Civil Defence volunteers provided the following assistance to the community:

providing much needed transport to essential workers; collected and delivered groceries for the elderly who lived in remote areas where driving conditions were very poor; and delivered meals on wheels to 16 houses.

At the same time, volunteers supported the Health Service Executive:

providing transport to homecare support workers on 16 occasions and providing ambulance crews for 3 patient transfers to Larissa Lodge, Merlin Park, Galway and Letterkenny University Hospital.

Resources utilised:  5  X 4WD Jeeps, 1 X Mercedes Ambulance, 1 X 4WD Ambulance and 12 volunteers.
