Kerry Civil Defence – Flood Relief Efforts – January 2014

From early on Friday morning, 24th January Kerry Civil Defence became aware of flood waters rising in Castleisland through calls from residents in the town. Following a 9.30 am call from Chief Fire Officer, Michael Hession the Auxiliary Fire Service Unit (AFS) was deployed with the Canter Crew Cab Truck, 120 filled sandbags and a crew of three Volunteers.
The AFS crew attended flooded sites at Church Street, the Community College, Tullig, Scartaglin Road and Cordal. Over 70 sandbags were utilized and the crew was stood down at 11.30am.
On Saturday 25th January the AFS Unit reported to Ballymullen Barracks, Tralee to fill sandbags and prepare for the next call-out. The crew reported at 12 noon and finished at 3pm. 172 sandbags were filled and loaded onto the truck. The Community College contacted Civil Defence Officer, Tom Brosnan for extra sandbags which were delivered by the AFS Unit. Sandbags were also delivered to residents in the Killorglin area due to concerns with flood water.
