On Saturday afternoon 4th August Wicklow Civil Defence responded to a request from Rathdrum Garda Station to assist in a search for a 74 year old man reported missing having fallen into the Avoca River.
10 Civil Defence Volunteer members assisted Coastguard personnel, Arklow Sea Scouts and Gardaí in a search operation manning searchpoints downstram of The Meetings at Whitebridge and Woodenbridge.
Just after 2pm the missing man’s body was spotted in the river by the helicopter crew in the proximity of Woodenbridge Golf Club. The body was reovered by a helicopter rescue swimmer before being taken to Tallaght Hospital for postmortem.
