Storm Eleanor – Relief Efforts

Civil Defence Units along the western seaboard were placed on standby to assist communities in the aftermath of Storm Eleanor, which struck the west coast on Tuesday 2^nd January.

Summary of Activities to date:

 4^th January:

• Galway – 6 members; 3 x 4WD Vehicles

 

On duty from 5am to assist with traffic management. Stood down at 7.45am as the flood risk abated.

 

3^rd January:

• Galway – 6 members; 3 x WD Vehicles

Mobilising crews from 4.30pm – 7pm to assist with traffic management and coastal monitoring. Crews will be mobilising again at 5am on Thursday 4^th January to assist with the same brief.

 

2^nd January:

• Galway – 6 members; 3 x 4WD Vehicles 

Assisted Galway City Council from 4 am with road closures and tidal monitoring. Also provided flood relief at CD training centre at Fire Station damaged by rapid rising flood waters.

• Kerry – 5 members; 2 x 4WD Vehicles 

Deployed sandbags throughout Tralee.

• Waterford County – 6 members; 2X 4WD Vehicles 

Monitoring Coastal flooding during high tides.

 

*Civil Defence Units remain on standby to assist as required. Civil Defence has 3,500 volunteers based in every Local Authority area in the country. Civil Defence has a wide range of equipment to deal with severe weather including 88 Boats, 47 Fire Tenders, 9 Floating Pontoon Units and 130 Four Wheel Drive vehicles.
