Annual Famine Commemoration Ceremony

Sligo was the host for this year’s Annual Commeration of the Great Famine and a beautiful ceremony was held in Stephens Street car park on Sunday 19th May. Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar and The Minister for Arts and Culture, Josepha Madigan together with 45 Ambassadors from countries around the world, Mayor of Sligo Rosaleen O’Grady and An Cathaoirleach Martin Baker attended.
The Taoiseach inspected the guards of honour and he, together with An Cathaoirleach and all the ambassadors laid wreaths which contained personal notes from the various countries to the people of Ireland. Minister Madigan later launched a booklet at the Model Niland centre on the effects the Great Famine had on the Sligo area.
Sligo Civil Defence provided first aid cover for the event with 10 volunteers in attendance.
