Cork West Civil Defence – Search & Rescue Operation
31 May 2012
On Sunday May 27th at 1217hrs, while conducting a search exercise in the area, Cork West Civil Defence received a request from Clonakilty Garda station to assist in the search for a missing person in the region of Long Strand, Castlefreke, Clonakilty.
On arrival at the scene the person had been located at the base of the cliffs at Cloghna Head, Rosscarbery Bay, and Civil Defence personnel provided immediate medical assistance. The casualty continued to be treated by Civil Defence and HSE paramedics for serious injuries as Coastguard personnel and Gardai requested helicopter evacuation due to the inaccessible terrain.
The Shannon Coastguard Helicopter, Rescue 115, arrived at the scene at 1400hrs, and winched the casualty from the base of the cliffs for onward transfer to Cork University Hospital.
The efficient and professional conduct of this operation was primarily due to the excellent Inter-Agency cooperation displayed by all Civil Defence, Coastguard, Gardai and HSE personnel at the scene.
