Exercise ‘Railroad’ – Carlow

The South East Region hosted a Major Emergency Management Exercise in Carlow on 29th March, 2012. The night-time scenario was a simulated rail accident requiring the declaration of a major emergency mobilisation of the PRA’s to the scene.
Due to the seriousness of the incident the National Emergency Co-ordination Centre (NECC) was also convened as a National Co-ordinating Group chaired by the Department of Transport, Tourism & Sport. A web-enabled Information Management System was used to inject events and to monitor and report on progress at and between the control centres.
Over 100 Civil Defence personnel from Carlow, Kilkenny, Dublin, Waterford City, Waterford County, South Tipperary and Kildare were involved in the Exercise as support participants, in the role of casualties and providing welfare to all of the agencies on site.
Acting College Principal, Róisín McGuire, Technical Officer, Kevin Houston and Communications Officer, Pat Kennedy attended in Carlow while Director General, Bill Smith attended at the NECC in Dublin.
