ARC Cancer Support – Torch of Hope Walk – October 2014

On Sunday 12th October approximately 300 cancer survivors or the families of those affected by cancer set off at 4.30pm to walk from The Wooden Bridge at Dollymount Strand in Clontarf on Dublin’s Northside and simultaneously from Blackrock Park on the Southside. The final kilometer was dedicated to cancer survivors who carried the Torch of Hope to the CHQ building in the city centre. At this location the torch was used to light a cauldron.

A celebratory ceremony was held at 6.30pm followed by food and refreshments for the 300-plus walkers prepared and served by Dublin Civil Defence Welfare service. The prepared food was well received by all involved.

Dublin Civil Defence also provided medical support for the walk and the ceremony in the city centre by providing two ambulances, one following each group of walkers to the city centre with a number of medics on medi-bikes also supporting the event to the city centre.

The volunteers certainly felt it was a worthwhile event as so many are or have been affected by cancer themselves to some degree. The event organisers submitted a letter of gratitude, highlighting the standard of service provided by Dublin civil Defence.
