Boeing lands in Enniscrone
13 May 2016
On the weekend 0f 6-8 May, Civil Defence was involved in one of most unusual events of the year, the landing of a large jet on a beach in Sligo. The plane was loaded onto a barge and left departed Shannon on Thursday12th May and sailed up along the Atlantic coast. The crew had to wait for favourable conditions. The plan was to land in Enniscrone on Friday morning but that was pushed out due to the late departure from Knockbeg in Shannon. It arrived into view in Enniscrone on Friday evening to beautiful weather and huge crowds. By Saturday morning the weather had changed and the planned beaching of the barge at early high tide had to be put on hold till Saturday evening when it was successfully completed and the plane started its final journey to the glamping site.
30 Civil Defence volunteers reported to Enniscrone for 7am Saturday only to be put on hold as the plans changed due to the weather conditions, but finally they got to roll up their sleeves at 5pm and assisted until approximately 4am Sunday morning. No-one wanted to leave once the move started everyone wanted to see it through and a huge thanks to the volunteers who assisted. Due to the large number of crowds in attendance up to the final minute Civil Defence volunteers were kept very busy with various incidents. 20 volunteers were again out on Sunday, stewarding and providing first aid cover for the large crowds. Thanks to all the volunteers from Mayo and Roscommon who assisted Sligo Civil Defence at this unique event.
