Civil Defence Flood Relief Efforts – (4^th –  5^th January 2016)

Since the second rise in water levels on 28^th December, a total of 317 Civil Defence Volunteers from across 28 local authority areas have been deployed to numerous duties in the countrywide flood relief effort.

 

• Tipperary (4^th – 5^th January 2016)

 

6 volunteers deployed, assisting the Department of Social Protection staff who are making assessments on flood damage, assisting flood victims to move damaged furniture  from their homes.

2 X 4WDs utilised.

 

• Wexford (4^th January 2016)

 

2 volunteers deployed, transporting Ministers Howlin and Kehoe and some Councillors around Enniscorthy to meet President Higgins.

2 X 4WD vehicles utilised.

 

• Cork North (4^th January 2016)

 

3 volunteers deployed to check on a vulnerable person cut off due to flood waters in Castletown roche area.

1 X 4WD utilised.

 

• Kildare (4^th January 2016)

 

2 volunteers were deployed, monitoring water levels on the river Barrow at Mageney and Levittstown, Athy.

1X4WD vehicle utilised.

 

• Limerick (4^th – 5^th January 2016)

 

5 volunteers were deployed, providing catering facilities for Local Authoring personnel.

2X4WD Vehicles, generators and pumps utilised.

 

• Laois (4^th – 5^th January 2016)

 

1 volunteer was deployed to monitor water levels on the River Barrow.

1X4WD Vehicle utilised.

 

• Cork South (4^th January 2016)

 

5 volunteers deployed,  assisting with pumping of water at Castlemartyr from N25 Waterford to Cork road.

2X4WD vehicles utilised.

 

8. Roscommon (4^th – 5^th January 2016)

14 volunteers deployed, evacuating residents from flooded homes, in Roscommon town, transporting patients from Ballybeg, Kiltoom to HSE Health Centres, providing transport to householders isolated due to flood waters, sandbagging properties in Barrymore, Athlone, transporting residents back to their homes following flooding in Cappeltrim.

3X4WD vehicles, 1X Boat, 6Xradios, life jackets, lights, wading poles and buoyancy aids utilised.

 

9. Cavan (4^th January 2016)

6 volunteers were deployed to assist families and farmers cut off by flood waters and distributed sandbags to flooded households..

2X4WD vehicles, 2 Inflatable boats utilised.

 

10.    Longford (4^th – 5^th January 2016)

6 volunteers were deployed d filling and distributing sandbags to areas under threat of flooding.

3X4WD vehicles utilised.

11. Dublin (4^th – 5^th January 2016)

5 volunteers deployed, used All Terrain Vehicle to transport isolated residents in Cloondra, Longford to and from town for provisions, used off-road truck at Newtowncashel, Longford to transport isolated residents and to distribute sandbags to homes under threat of flooding .

1X All terrain vehicle, 1X off-road truck utilised.

 

12. Westmeath (4^th – 5^th January 2016)

13 volunteers deployed, provided checks to vulnerable people, transported public health nurse to check on vulnerable patient, monitoring water levels in worst affected areas.

3 X 4WD vehicles, 1 Trailer and 1 Minibus utilised.

 

 

*Civil Defence Units remain on standby to assist as required. Civil Defence has 4,000 volunteers based in every Local Authority area in the country. Civil Defence has a wide range of equipment to deal with flooding including 88 Boats, 47 Fire Tenders, 9 Floating Pontoon Units and 130 Four Wheel Drive vehicles.
