Civil Defence Regional Exercise Kerry 11th March 2017
13 March 2017
The first Civil Defence regional exercise was held in Tralee, Co. Kerry on Saturday 11th March 2017, hosted by Kerry Civil Defence.
Civil Defence teams from Limerick, Cork South, Cork West and Cork North travelled to the kingdom for the day long exercise. Kerry Civil Defence Officer Tom Brosnan and his team have been planning the regional exercise for the past few months.
Volunteers were put through various tasks and tests to display their sills in treating casualties, first aid, search and rescue, radio communications, fire and flood response. There is also a fun element to the exercise which encourages team building and leadership skills.
Paul Baynam, Operations Commander with Kerry Civil Defence said ‘This is a fantastic opportunity for members of different units and sections to integrate and be part of a team working through several difference scenarios which volunteers could be potentially responding to’.
Kerry Civil Defence also hosted a dinner for the participants at the Manor West Hotel which was attended by Kerry County Council Director of Services John Breen, Principal Officer of Civil Defence Branch Stephen Hall and Director of the Department of Defence Robert Mooney.
Kerry CDO Tom Brosnan thanked all the teams for participating and he also thanked and acknowledged the level of work and engagement by his own volunteers in Kerry in preparation for the regional exercise.
Cork West were the overall winners on the day and Cork South were awarded a prize for the foot drill section of the exercise.
Well done to all teams involved.
