Civil Defence Severe Weather Relief Efforts – 28/02/2018 – 5/03/2018

SUMMARY REPORT

Civil Defence Units have been deployed to assist the Primary Response Agencies and Communities since 28th February, deployed to numerous duties in the countrywide support effort following Storm Emma. 350 volunteer members have responded to date from 27 separate local authority areas.

70 members remain active today, 5th March from units in Dublin, Carlow, Kilkenny, Waterford, Wexford, Donegal, Cavan, Tipperary (assisting Wexford) and Laois (assisting Wexford).

• Transported patients and staff to nursing homes
• Transported public health nurses to calls
• Transported special needs centre employees to work
• Transported ill children to hospital
• Transported HSE staff from hotels to hospitals
• Transported catering staff to hospitals
• Transported bone marrow from Belfast to James’ hospital
• Transported elderly persons to collect pensions
• Transported medical laboratory staff to work
• Transported Gas and Gas Fitters to Nursing home
• Transported Council Water staff to check on water wells and pumps
• Homeless Shelter Open 24hrs a day (Dublin)
• Activated severe weather resilience desk for VES (Cork & Kerry)
• Delivered Meals on Wheels
• Recovered people from stranded cars
• Providing hot food for staff and volunteers in Control Centre
• Delivered medications and peg-food to isolated homes
• Checked on vulnerable people
• Delivered food, water and fuel provisions to homes
• Recued a hillwalker
• Supplied blankets to Cork Airport
• Supplied beds and blankets for homeless shelter
• Provided sleeping bags to residential centre
• Assisted Fire Service to reach isolated homes
• Evacuated people from isolated homes to hotels
• Recovered Ambulances from snow drifts
• Clearing Luas platforms and Lines (Dublin)
• Provided beds to emergency shelter
• Assisted Gardaí with traffic management
• Set up Control Centres and manned phones
• Assisted with clearance of snow
• Monitoring of water levels

The major items of equipment deployed by Civil Defence in supporting the relief efforts have been:

* Civil Defence has 3,500 volunteers based in every Local Authority area in the country. Civil Defence has a wide range of equipment to deal with severe weather including 88 Boats, 47 Fire Tenders, 9 Floating Pontoon Units and 130 Four Wheel Drive vehicles.
