Donegal, Severe Weather Relief Efforts (Snowfall) 3rd – 11th January 2025

Snowy and icy conditions made driving conditions dangerous across Donegal during the recent cold snap, which lasted 3^rd – 11^th January. Several yellow weather warnings were issued for Donegal, and as temperatures dropped to as low as minus 7.5 degrees overnight on 9^th January, Donegal was escalated to an orange weather warning.

During this period, Civil Defence volunteers provided the following assistance to the community:

providing much needed transport to essential workers; collected and delivered groceries for the elderly who lived in remote areas where driving conditions were very poor; and delivered meals on wheels to 16 houses.

At the same time, volunteers supported the Health Service Executive:

providing transport to homecare support workers on 16 occasions and providing ambulance crews for 3 patient transfers to Larissa Lodge, Merlin Park, Galway and Letterkenny University Hospital.

Resources utilised:  5  X 4WD Jeeps, 1 X Mercedes Ambulance, 1 X 4WD Ambulance and 12 volunteers.
