Flood Relief Efforts – 22nd November 2017

Civil Defence Units countrywide were placed on standby to assist communities in the aftermath of severe rainfall throughout the night of Tuesday 21st November and throughout Wednesday 22nd November.  In many areas Civil Defence Officers attended meetings throughout the day as part of the Local Authority Crisis Management Team.

21st -22nd November:

• Laois

21st November: 26 members; 5 X 4WD Vehicles; 1 Minibus; 2 Boats (2 4WD Vehicles also provided by Kildare Civil Defence and 1 All-Terrain Vehicle provided by Dublin Civil Defence).

Evacuated householders from housing estates in Mountmellick; Deployed sandbags and assisted Local Authority and Gardaí with assessment of water levels.

22nd November: 14 members (2 from Dublin with All-Terrain Vehicle):

All-Terrain Vehicle assisted in transporting a paramedic to assess the medical condition of a householder whose home was inaccessible due to flood waters.

21st November:

• Kildare – 10 members; 4 X 4WD Vehicles; 2 X 4WD Vehicles provided to assist Laois

Deployed sandbags to households in Caragh, Kilmeague and Newbridge.

 

• Kerry – 10 members; 3 X 4WD Vehicles, 1 Trailer, 1 Canter Truck

Deployed sandbags to households in Causeway, Lixnaw; Set up Command & Control utilising TETRA radios to monitor flood levels throughout the county.

 

*Civil Defence Units remain on standby to assist as required. Civil Defence has 3,500 volunteers based in every Local Authority area in the country. Civil Defence has a wide range of equipment to deal with  severe weather including 88 Boats, 47 Fire Tenders, 9 Floating Pontoon Units and 130 Four Wheel Drive vehicles.
