Kildare Civil Defence – World Rescue Challenge, Azores, Portugal

Kildare Assistant Civil Defence Officer Shannon Reid and Volunteer Aaron Cullen are on a high after placing 3rd In the Trauma Complex Challenge at the World Rescue Challenge, Azores, Portugal last week and placing the 4th best Trauma Team In the World.
Competing against 31 different trauma teams from all over the world, Kildare Civil Defence were representing Ireland in The World Championships for a second time, taking home a 3rd place prize on both occassions.
The team was assessed on it’s pre-hospital emergency care and “lifesaving” capabilities during two fifteen minute trauma based scenarios that are evaluated in Scene Safety, Initial Patient Contact, Assessment of Injuries and Condition, Treatment of Casualty and Patient Handover. The results highlighted the high standard and professionalism Civil Defence Volunteers are trained to countrywide.
The objective of the World Rescue Organisation Trauma Challenge is to assist in the development of trauma related skills of Firefighters, First Responders and Rescue Workers to enable them to deal successfully with the vast range of casualty centred incidents. The mission is to provide a platform for rescue personnel from around the world to come together, to enhance and develop competence levels in first responder trauma care.
After placing first in the Rescue Organisation of Ireland National Trauma Competition for the past two years, Kildare Civil Defence achieved national titles as Best Trauma Medics which qualified the team to represent Ireland in the World Rescue Challenge in the Azores, Portugal. They are the highest ranking Irish Trauma Team at International Level.
A massive achievement for the Kildare team who have demonstrated a very high standard of technical skill and care alongside other Irish teams who are recognised on the World Stage.
They were joined by other Trauma teams from Dublin Civil Defence who placed 8th Best Trauma Team in the world, and a joined Trauma Team from Wicklow Fire Service/Dublin Fire Brigade who were placed 12th best Trauma Team In The World.
In the Extrication Challenge, Dublin Fire Brigade placed 11th best team in the world. A great success for Ireland overall.
