Kilkenny Civil Defence – River Rescue – March 2013

At approximately 1am on Monday morning 18th March Kilkenny Civil Defence was tasked by Kilkenny Fire Service to assist with a River Rescue.

A young girl fell into the river Nore from John Bridge in Kilkenny City and managed to climb onto the bridge abutment. With the effort it took and the cold from the river she then fell unconscious. The Fire service was called to the incident but upon their arrival they quickly realised that the only way of rescuing the girl was from the water.

Kilkenny Civil Defence was mobilised to assist in the rescue. Kilkenny Civil Defence river rescue crew were briefed, equipped and on the water within 35 minutes of the call-out and with the assistance of Kilkenny Sub-Aqua quickly rescued the girl, got her onto the rescue boat and handed her over to the waiting Ambulance.

Kilkenny Civil Defence were thanked for their assistance by Kilkenny Fire Service and Kilkenny Gardai.

The hours of training undertaken on that stretch of river for such a scenario over the winter months and the dark evenings came to fruition. The dedication and the foresight of the river rescue crew meant that the rescue had a successful conclusion.

It is understood the girl will make a full recovery.
