Mayo Civil Defence – Galeforce West – August 2012

Gaelforce West is the largest one day adventure race of its kind in the world. It is a multi-sport adventure race involving cycling, running, hiking and kayaking. The course of approximately 67km stretches from the stunning Glassilaun beach close to Killary Adventure Centre Co Galway to Westport Co Mayo. En route there are some significant obstacles to cross, including Killary Harbour and the famous holy mountain of Croagh Patrick.

Mayo Civil Defence is the sole provider of Medical Aid to the 2000 competitors throughout the course.

The Civil Defence operation included four Ambulances, four Emergency Response Teams, a Command and Control Unit and a Medical Treatment Centre positioned from the start to the finish of the race.

Mayo Civil Defence had 25 volunteers on duty under the guidance of the event Medical Officer, Dr. Maura Grummell and Commanders Fran Power & Tommy Walsh.

The Volunteer members dealt with 40 casualties throughout the 13hour day, three of whom were transferred to Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar. All casualties were treated with the utmost professionalism by the volunteers on duty.

The HSE – National Ambulance Service (Mayo) supported and assisted Mayo Civil Defence throughout the course of the event.
