Meath Civil Defence Duty at Bon Jovi Concert Slane – 15th June 2013
80 Meath Civil Defence Volunteer members assisted by Boat Units from Cavan, Dublin, Louth and Monaghan provided a range of services at the Bon Jovi concert in Slane Castle on Saturday 15th June.
Duties included crowd safety on Slane Bridge, in support of the Gardaí, water safety on the River Boyne with the Coastguard, and First Aid in the concert arena. The operation was supported by a Command and Control team and the Meath Welfare Unit who provided sustenance for the deployment of a total of 113 Civil Defence Volunteers.
The new Tetra radio system was utilised to great effect as were the GPS enabled radios, which enabled the Command and Control Unit to direct teams more effectively to requests for assistance in the arena.
As is customary with Slane concerts, the Volunteers were on duty from 11am to the early hours of Sunday morning – a shift system not being a viable option due to traffic restrictions around Slane.
Upwards of 60,000 patrons attended the concert with no serious incidents to report. All those involved in the organisation of the concert expressed satisfaction at the smooth running of the event. Despite the long day, most Volunteers went home with a smile in the knowledge that they had done a good job and contributed to the success of the event.
