23 May 2014
Kerry Civil Defence AFS Unit was activated at 7.30pm on Tuesday 20th May by the Sub-Station Officer of Tralee Fire Station initially to assist with provision of sandbags for the Kerrins O Rahilly`s area of Tralee.
The AFS Unit was subsequently deployed with the Canter Crew Cab deploying 120 filled sandbags to a local resident outside Tralee after the river beside him burst its bank and flooded his house. At 8.30 pm the AFS crew arrived at the scene at which time the house itself at ground level was flooded with about 6” water covering the entire area. The Fire Service gave the go-ahead for the AFS Unit to pump the flood water – Civil Defence Officer, Tom Brosnan remained on site during the operation. At 8.45 a team was deployed to collect a Fire Truck with the two portable pumps and extra crews. At 9.15 the AFS team set up lighting and checked area for manholes, drains and hazards around the site which were identified and marked with tape. At 10.15 a Fire Truck arrived at the flood scene and deployed both pumps to pump the flood water. The task and tidy up was complete at 1.15am with all crews fit and well after duty.
