Missing Person Search – Donegal
12 January 2015
At 12 noon on the morning of 3rd January 2015 Donegal Civil Defence Boat Crew was activated to assist An Garda Síochána and members of Killybegs and Killala Coastguard Units in the search for a 37-yr-old male last seen in Carrick, South West Donegal on the morning of the 1st January. Donegal Civil Defence provided land and water crews daily to search the River Ghlinne and surrounding areas of Teelin and Carrick. Civil Defence minibuses were used to transport searchers to various search areas, while Donegal Civil Defence Radio Controller was used in the incident room to assist in the co-ordinating of the teams on the ground. During the search Leitrim Civil Defence Boat Crew assisted their colleagues by providing the use of their SONAR equipment and Underwater Camera.
Over the course of the week, weather conditions hampered the search and made the task more difficult. On Sunday, 11th January the search resumed at 9am on what was the 10th day of searching. Hundreds of local volunteers joined Civil Defence members, Coast Guard teams, An Garda Síochána and Mountain Rescue and at 2pm a body was recovered from the water at Kilbeg, about 1km from the GAA pitch. The search was subsequently stood down.
An Garda Síochána thanked Civil Defence for their support and professionalism during the course of the search.
Donegal Civil Defence extends sincere thanks to their colleagues in Leitrim Civil Defence for their support throughout the course of the week.
