Road Traffic Incident – Tullow, Co Carlow
On Saturday 14th March a young Tullow man escaped with his life after a road traffic collision which saw his car plunge into the River Slaney at 8am on the link road in Tullow. Tullow Gardaí were immediately called to the scene and due to the absence of the driver the Garda Air Support unit were called to begin a search of the river with the assistance of locals who formed a search party. Carlow Civil Defence was tasked by Gardaí and plans were drawn up with Tullow Gardaí to conduct an initial search of the river by a team of four Civil Defence Swift Water rescuers. At 3pm the young man was discovered some distance away, cold, extremely disorientated and in need of immediate medical assistance near the Bunclody Road. Civil Defence Emergency Medical Responders stabilised the young man, administering life saving oxygen with the assistance of a member of Tullow Fire Service before the arrival of an Ambulance which brought the young man to St. Luke’s hospital Kilkenny where he was treated.
