Roscommon Civil Defence – Lough Ree Search – 21st March – 5th April 2014

The body of a fisherman reported missing on Lough Ree on Friday 21st March was recovered on Saturday 5th April following a 16-day search of the lake and the shore line.
The successful search effort was a huge multi-agency operation. Agencies involved were – Malin Head Coast Guard, Sligo Coast Guard Helicopter, Lough Ree Coast guard, RNLI, An Garda Síochána, Naval Service Diving Section, N.I. Police Service, Air Corps Helicopter, Garda Under Water Rescue Unit, Community Rescue Service of NI, various Sub aqua Units and Roscommon Civil Defence (assisted by Leitrim, Galway and Cavan units).
In addition to a great response from Civil Defence volunteers (28 members on duty at the peak of the search) Roscommon Civil Defence provided rescue jeeps, ambulances, a command and control vehicle, two minibuses and three boats with further boats provided by Leitrim and Galway units. The Roscommon Welfare Unit provided facilities and hot food and drinks to the volunteers on duty during the course of the operation.
